OASIS

  • OH!YES! OASIS!
An oasis is a unique water land form: in order to be considered an oasis, the area has to be surrounded by desert, have a water source, and have vegetation.

  •  - An oasis is a small patch of vegetation surrounded by desert.
  •  Communities have traditionally planted strong trees, such as palms, around the perimeter of oases to keep the desert sands from their delicate crops and water. An oasis is an area made fertile by a source of freshwater in an otherwise dry and arid region.

  • The location of oases has been of critical importance for trade and transportation routes in desert areas; caravans must travel via oases so that supplies of water and food can be replenished. Thus, political or military control of an oasis has in many cases meant control of trade on a particular route.
  • The largest self-contained oasis in the world is the Al-Ahsa Oasis. Located in south-eastern Saudi Arabia, there are more than 2.5 million palm trees in the oasis, which is fed from a huge underground aquifer, which allows agriculture all year round in a region that is otherwise sand desert.
